POEMS SET TO MUSIC
“Rose Jr.” by Lisa Pegram performed with the renowned Pepe Gonzales on bass and Naser Abadey on drums, along with their world class jazz combo.(Smithsonian African Art Museum, Jazz & Poetry Month Celebration 2012; Click title for video))
In 2009, classical composer David Arbury and I conspired on a poem/song cycle entitled “Tradewinds” for choral music as a commission for the Earlham College Concert Choir. He set my series of cleave poems to music for percussion and voice. The performance below was recorded live at the historic St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington, DC. In 2012 we were at it again, collaborating on a song cycle for alto voice. This has grown into a full series, Songs of Root & Branch, featuring my poems “Latte,” “Lighthouse,” and “Snorkeling” which soprano Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek sang at Columbia and Georgetown Universities. Our latest commission “Heir Apparent” debuted in a 2017 concert series by the Six Degree Singers. We are at work on a duet composition and a new song series is coming soon.
